The Attorney General of the United States of America, Mr. Eric Holder will be
attending an official meeting of CARICOM's Attorneys-general in Barbados from
Thursday 21st May, 2009.
The Attorney General who has both paternal and maternal roots in Barbados will
be on a three day visit to the island scheduled to be at the island's Hilton
hotel.
Mr. Holder's father, Eric Himpton Holder, Sr. (1905 - 1970) was born in Saint
Joseph,Barbados, and
emigrated to the United States at the age of 11. Miriam, his mother, her parents
interestingly were from the island of Barbados as well.
Mr. Holder's visit comes just over a month after his President, Mr. Barack Obama
has visited the CARICOM region during the Fifth
Summit of the Americas in Trinidad
and Tobago.
The Attorney General like his President, are the first persons of African
descent to reach those prestigious offices in the United States of America.
Mr. Holder while on the island will meet with Prime Minister of Barbados, Mr.
David Thompson, Attorney General of Barbados, Mr. Freundel Stuart, Minister of
Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean and Minister of Housing and Lands Michael
Lashley.
On his visit the attorney general is expected to have talks on cooperation on
drug-trafficking, violent crime, gangs, and judicial and law enforcement
technical assistance, among other topics. He will also speak at the official
opening of Tamarind Hall Municipal Complex in Horse Hill, St Joseph, Barbados,
which will be renamed in his honor.
